In this tutorial, we will learn how to create a vintage label in illustrator.
Tutorial Details
Program: Illustrator CS5
Estimated Completion Time: 30-35 Minutes
Step 1
Create a new document with 800px width and 800px height in adobe illustrator.
Step 2
Select the ’rounded rectangle tool’ to draw a rectangle as shown below. Keep stroke to ‘none’.
Now duplicate this layer by clicking on the square at the right top corner of the layers panel and choose ‘Duplicate layer 1’. Drag this duplicated layer below original rectangle layer. Move it a bit to the right and downward. Change its fill color to gray as below.
Step 3
Next, to add shadow, duplicate this gray rectangle layer, Place this layer below the rest of layers. Drag it more to the right and downward. Once you are done, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur. Use 24px value here. After that, reduce the opacity of this layer to 50%. Change its blending mode to ‘Multiply’.
Step 4
Now we’ll make a nice vintage style ribbon over the label. Select the ‘pen tool’ to draw the shapes as shown below.
To form left end of the ribbon, duplicate the right sided end layer. Then go to Object > Rotate. Use 180 degree value here and drag this rotated end to the left side of ribbon. After that, make two triangular shapes using ‘pen tool’ to finish the ribbon.
Step 5
Next, we’ll give the ribbon stitched effect. Select the ‘pen tool’ to draw a line on the ribbon along which you want to apply the stitch effect. Make the fill color to ‘none’ and stroke of 3pt. Click on the stroke in the appearance panel and use the given settings to give it stitched look.
Give entire ribbon stitched look using the same technique.
Step 6
Draw another rectangle over the blue rectangle using ’rounded rectangle tool’. Keep fill color to ‘none’ and stroke of 2pt.
Step 7
Select the ‘type tool’ to type in text over the ribbon. Press Ctrl+ T to open the character panel. You can select the font of choice and adjust its size from here. To place the text over the ribbon, we need to rotate it a bit, use ‘selection tool (V)’ to do so.
Duplicate this text layer; place it below the original text layer. Change its color.
Add more text and give it some character in the same way.
Step 8
Next, we’ll decorate our label by creating some vintage elements. Draw an angled line using ‘pen tool’. Keep fill to ‘none’ and stroke of 1pt. Use the given stroke settings in the appearance panel.
Duplicate this layer and arrange as shown below.
Now select the ‘ellipse tool’ to draw small circle, duplicate this circle layer few times and arrange them as shown below.
Step 9
Next, select the ‘star tool’ to make small stars. Arrange them as below.
Collect each 3 stars group in a layer and duplicate this layer. Change its color to gray and drag it a bit downward and to the right.
Step 10
Lastly, we’ll create ribbon shadow. Duplicate the 3 shape layers forming the ribbon one by one. Place each copy below the original layer and reduce its opacity to 40%.
That’s it, our vintage label is all done. Hope you learned something useful. Don’t forget to share your thoughts.
