In this tutorial you will learn how to achieve three gorgeous colors of autumn from one photo in a few simple steps using Adjustment layers, Image mode and some retouching techniques.
The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial.
Open the autumn photo. I notice that there is an unwanted object on autumn road and I don’t like it. So I make a new layer above the autumn background ( press Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+N), choose Clone Stamp Tool ( hit S on your keyboard) and make sure that Sample All Layers is checked on property bar. Clone over this object. We have result:
Make a Gradient Map layer (Layer-New adjustment layer-Gradient Map). We will add more dark blue and contrast for picture.
Set this layer to Soft light 100%.
This is result we have:
Create a Selective Color layer. This step is to change yellow tone into pink and light orange also add some cyan for tree body.
I use a Color Balance layer to add more orange tone of our autumn pic:
In this final step I will add more vibrant red and cyan for picture. Create a Selective Color layer:
Open autumn photo. This step is to remove unwanted object as we did in first tutorial.
I use a Hue/Saturation layer and work on Yellow and Red channels. You will see the main color changes strongly:
Depending on your picture tone, drag the buttons till you get desired look. Be careful with Hue/Saturation tool because incorrect value will destroy your photo .
Make a Hue/Saturation layer again to make the tone more vibrant with red and a bit brighter:
As you see the the picture color looks a bit dull so I will do a step to fix it . Create a new layer, use soft brush and color #fcefd9 painting on the top of tree as shown below
Change the mode to Overlay 50% then duplicate this layer:
The road part which catches the light from above must be brighter so I use a new layer, take soft brush with same color in step 4 painting on it. Put it as Soft light 50%:
We will increase contrast for picture. Make a Brightness/Contrast layer:
Open autumn photo and duplicate it we have background copy. Go to Image-Mode-Lab Color and after that click “Don’t flatten” when you are asked. Then choose Layer-New adjustment layer-Curves:
We get:
Hit Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E to merge all layers. Turn image into RGB color ( Image-Mode-RGB Color) and click OK when you are asked.
I use a Selective Color layer to get the basic color :
Add a Selective Color layer again to make color more vibrant:
Depending on colors in your picture, adjust channels you want.
Final step: I use Clone Tool to remove unwanted object as in previous tutorials.
